Postconsumer HDPE

post consumer HDPE scrapHDPE stands for High Density Polyethylene and is a form of plastic most commonly used in products and packaging such as milk jugs, margarine tubs, garbage containers, detergent bottles and water pipes.

HDPE is Polyethylene with a density greater or equal to 0.941 g/cm3. It has a low degree of branching and thus stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength. British call this polymer “polythene”, although this name is not recognised scientifically. Over 60 million tons of HDPE is produced and thrown away every year. Even though HDPE can be easily recycled, most of it still ends burried in waste pits.

Postconsumer HDPE Scrap comes in various shapes and forms. It can be sorted by color (mixed, clear, white, etc..), it can be in bales or compressed cubicles consisting of whatever products were originally made from HDPE. It can be grinded into flakes or heated to a melting point, and then made into small granules also called HDPE pellets.
